Expect Mör at Salon Mör
By Melissa Maynard
With a vast array of salons in Chicago, you can
always expect the best at Salon Mör. We caught up with
owner Gina King to let us in on the secret to a successful haircut
and color, trends for fall and how styles differ in Chicago as
opposed to the West Coast.
Falling for Mör
As soon as summer rolls into the windy city, we are already thinking
about our hairstyle forecasts for the fall season, even before
the leaves begin to change. True style mavens are always looking
for the next new haircut or look. "We are very excited about working
both contemporary and classical shapes together into each cut.
Expect to see very classical haircuts (a bob) with whimsical pieces
and color to follow suit. The color will be beautiful soft tones
that vary in placement to accent these "new" shapes," says owner
of Salon Mör Gina King.
Hair by the Rules
There are many important key rules to follow before doing anything
drastic. King explains that setting your heart on someone else's
haircut or color is not always the best idea. "Most of the time
your hair is not that length, texture or color. Instead, pick
a style that inspires you and work with your creative stylist
to find your unique place in that style, " adds King.
Finish the look
As an editor I am always looking at key trends that will accent
a look. The usual handbag or accessory is always important, but
if the hair isn't right, nobody is looking at your new YSL handbag.
According to King, so often, men and women concentrate on giving
themselves the perfect image or look that they forget about their
hair. One should be as brave and forward with their stylists as
they are when shopping at Barney's. We here at Factiõ couldn't
agree mör! Finish the look with a knock out hairstyle and color.
The Color Specialist
With a little know-how from King (she's a color specialist) you'll
be on your way to amazing hair. "Color doesn't work if the hair
is thrashed and damaged. Listen to the chemical limitations set
by your tinter. These limitations are based on chemical history
and existing color. Work creatively to find the perfect solution
for you. Remember these are not paints, they are chemicals and
we are not working on canvas, we are working on a protein, your
hair," says King.
Chicago Vs. The West Coast
Did you think Chicago women are more daring when it comes to hairstyles?
According to King (who has worked in Chicago, LA and Arizona)
it's true. She tells us that weather plays a key role in the
way hair is cut/colored and styled. In Arizona, it is tough to
wear an aggressive style each day because of the heat and sun.
Most women spend months in a ponytail. On the other hand, in Chicago
the sun is not always an issue and people tend to be more open
to a new style or color.
Mör on Salon Mör
Factiõ Magazine: How did you come up with
the name, Salon Mör?
Gina King: I found Mör in a baby book of
names. This particular definition reads: of the ocean the beginning
of life born without compromise. It was chosen for our dedication
to the integrity of hair (no shortcuts)!
Factiõ Magazine: How does your salon differ
from others?
Gina King: Salon Mör is about hair! Although
we are recognized for our vibe and serene atmosphere, our commitment
is to the hair. We are a teaching salon with a functioning artistic
team. We design both Spring and Fall collections for cuts and
colors each year.
Factiõ Magazine: How do you get inspired?
Gina King: Fashion Fashion Fashion. Hard
or soft, urban or retro, fashion leads the way. I studied fashion
history in college, which as been an invaluable resource to how
I design new hair color techniques now, and also my ability to
interpret what I see happening in fashion and bring it to a hair
color.
Factiõ Magazine: What do you love about being
a salon owner and a corrective color specialist?
Gina King: I have always taught my students/staff
that color correction separates you from the masses. This is where
one truly gets to spread his or her wings in a true correction
(not a cover up). One will need knowledge, patience, skill and
speed. Not everyone can fix everything.
Owning a salon is how I share my vision with my
artistic team and customers. I can watch how each person in my
salon adds to the mix, until it becomes better than I can imagine!
